It was a rare moment. So rare it happens only once in the lifetime of a few. A fairy tale manifest. In her wildest fantasies she never imagined it. All around her were vases and flowers of gold and white – the decors, the Ashebis, the people, even hotplates for food.

All around her, love and laughter, banters and good cheer filled the air with a vibrant new energy.

The mesmerising smile on her face whispered the gratitude of Lady Christiana Onah as she stood in the Manchester event centre to cut her 70th birthday cake surrounded by family and friends from all walks of life.

Her son, Udoka Onah, a lawyer, tells her story and why this year is special:

“17th July 2023 is a special day as it marks the 70th birthday and celebration of the life of a remarkable woman, our beloved Mum, lady Christiana Onah.

Born on 17th July 1953, she has led a life filled with love, joy, and moments of both triumph and sorrow. As we reflect on her journey, we are reminded of the enduring bonds of family, the strength of a loving marriage, and the resilience she displayed in the face of adversity. Let us take a glimpse into the significant milestones that shaped her life.

“Mama was a single child to Rebecca Agbo ( her mother), prompting her father ( Apollos Agbo) to marry other wives in search of a male child.

Born in Ovoko, she grew in Anglican faith, completed primary school in St Peters primary school Ovoko. Secondary school was at Ngwo girls Technical School where she excelled in academics and sports. She further completed Teachers training in St Cyprain’s Nsukka.

Mum’s story of love began when she met her soulmate, the late Sir Emmanuel Onah. Theirs was a love that transcended time and space, and even the Nigerian civil war, as they tied the knot during the ranging war in 1968. As husband and wife, they complemented each other perfectly, nurturing a beautiful family together.

“She has taught me the importance of family being cohesive and in unity.”

The couple embraced parenthood with open hearts and welcomed seven wonderful children into their lives. Ikem John Onah was the Elderst son. The rest of the kids are: Mr Chinedu Ephraim Onah, Barr Udoka Emmanuel Onah, Mrs Nchekwube Blessing Onah, Mr Kelechukwu Gideon Onah( late), Mrs Oluchukwu Gift Onah and Mr Uchenna Isaac Onah.

Mama’s dedication to her family was unparalleled. She ensured a warm and nurturing home and also played an active role in shaping her children’s lives. Her guidance and support laid the foundation for their success and instilled values that would stay with them forever.

As a mother, Mama was a source of unwavering love and encouragement. She had a unique ability to balance the responsibilities of motherhood while also pursuing her passions and interests. Her nurturing nature extended beyond her own children, as she often offered support and care to others in need. Her home became a haven of warmth, laughter, and love, leaving lasting impressions on all who entered her life.

Her home became a haven of warmth, laughter, and love.

However, life’s journey is not without its challenges. Tragedy struck when Mama faced the untimely loss of not only her beloved son- Mr Kelechukwu Gideon Onah but subsequently her husband, Sir Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Onah, on 17th Dec 2007. The passing of her life partner left a void that could never be filled, and it was a period of immense grief for the entire family.

She’s a source of inspiration for all.

In the wake of her husband’s passing, Mama displayed remarkable resilience and strength. She drew upon the love and support of her children, extended family and friends, and gradually, she found solace in cherished memories and her staunch Christian beliefs. She embraced the life lessons learned from her late husband and carried on his legacy in her heart.

Despite the profound loss, Mama continued to be a beacon of love and hope for her family. She discovered new passions and interests that enriched her life, proving that the human spirit can find light even in the darkest of times. Her grace and dignity during this period inspired all who knew her.

“We honour the indelible mark she left on our lives.”

As we gather to celebrate her birthday, let us remember the lessons she imparted: to cherish family, pray ceaselessly, to love unconditionally, and to find strength in the face of adversity.”
